Each plant and animal tends to produce farmore seeds, eggs, and young than is necessary to maintain its population.

The introduction of the table fork into England in 1608 changed the English people’s way of eating. For instance, the use of forks made it possible for them to consume berries without making fingers dirty. 25 years later, the first table fork reached America. Talking of the use of forks, there are a few clear differences between what’s normal in America and what holds true in Britain. For example, in America, when food needs cutting with a knife, people generally cut a bite, then lay aside the knife and switch the fork to their right hand. The they pick up one bite at a time. By contrast, Britons keep the fork in the left hand and don’t lay the knife down.

Water is vital for our existence. Not only do we drink it for survival, the majority of the human body is also composed of water. The earth’s weather patterns are closely linked to water too, as they are determined by the complex patterns of changes and movement of water ion the atmosphere.

The ocean covers 70% of the earth’s surface. One of its most important roles is distributing the heat around the world: it absorbs energy in the form of heat, and releases it more evenly across the earth. Since the ocean is so effective at absorbing heat, the first few

meters of the ocean’s surface hold as much heat as the earth’s entire atmosphere.

Almost all of us grew up eating meat, going to zoos, and perhaps wearing leather. Many of us bought our beloved “pets” at pet shops or kept beautiful birds in cages. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved.

People often ask if animals should have rights, and quite simply, the answer is “Yes!” Supporters of animal rights believe that animals have a value completely separate from their usefulness to humans. They believe that every creature with a will to live has a right to live free from pain and suffering. Animal rights is not just a philosophy—it is a social movement that challenges society’s traditional views that all animals exist solely for human use.

The most traditional definition of a human community was “a group of people larger than a family that interact.” A community may include people who have at least one common point of interest. In the past, community members lived relatively close to one another in one geographical location: in the same building, on the same street, in the same neighborhood or area, or in the same village, town, or city. Nowadays, however, the word community can mean a national, an international, or even an online group of interacting individuals. Therefore, a “new” definition of community might be “a group of people that recognize that they have something in common.”

Can online education ever be education of the very best sort? Not long ago I watched an online course. The instructor was intelligent and learned. But the course wasn’t great and could never have been. There were students on hand, but the class seemed addressed to no one in particular. There was nothing you could get from that course that you couldn’t get from a good book on the same subject.

A truly memorable college class is a co-operation between teacher and students. It’s a one-time-only event. Learning at its best is collective work. In real courses the students and teachers come together and create a vital atmosphere of learning. I don’t think an Internet course ever will.
